Hoxley & Porter

Tucked away on the bustling Upper Street in Islington, Hoxley & Porter is one of those places that feels like a bit of a hidden gem-even though it's right there in plain sight at 153 Upper St, London N1 1RA. If you’ve been scouring London for a restaurant that blends immersive atmosphere with a menu full of bold, beautifully crafted dishes, you’ll want to pay attention to this one.

The first thing you notice when stepping into Hoxley & Porter is the vibe. Think Victorian expedition meets speakeasy lounge-opulent but not pretentious, dramatic but still laid back. The interior is bathed in rich, vintage decor that makes you feel like you've been whisked off to a different era. It’s the kind of place where you could sip a perfectly balanced Espresso Martini while planning your next adventure, or just enjoy a relaxed evening solo or with friends.

Now let’s talk food. This isn’t your average pub fare. Hoxley & Porter delivers a modern European menu with a creative twist, and they don’t hold back. Among the standout dishes, the Prawn & Lobster Raviolis are a crowd favorite, delicate yet packed with flavor. If you’re into small plates, you’ll want to try the Salt & Pepper Squid with Garlic Mayo-crispy, tender, and just the right amount of heat. The Bruschetta here also deserves a mention, especially for those who appreciate the simplicity of good ingredients done well.

For mains, the Braised Suckling Pig and Pork Belly hit all the right notes-succulent, rich, and comforting. Vegetarians aren't left out either; the Vegetarian Sunday Roast Dinner is hearty, satisfying, and plated with the same care as any meat dish. And if breakfast is your thing, the Gourmet Full English Breakfast is as indulgent as it sounds-definitely not something you’ll forget anytime soon.

Desserts at Hoxley & Porter could be a separate attraction of their own. From the decadently sticky Toffee Pudding to a refreshingly smooth Tiramisu, this is the part of the meal where you'll be glad you saved room. Sweet-toothed visitors also rave about the Cauliflower Cheese Baked-yes, technically a side, but comforting enough to feel like dessert in disguise.

Drinks? Absolutely a strong point here. This place takes pride in its cocktail game. The Sloe Gin Sling is a personal favorite-fruity, aromatic, and strong enough to warrant a second (or third). If you're into something a bit cheeky, the Sex on the Beach is a fun classic that never disappoints. The wine list is impressive too, curated with care and offering something for every palate. And for those who prefer hops, yes-they serve lager and craft beers that pair beautifully with their small plates.

What also makes Hoxley & Porter stand out is how welcoming the space feels. It's got wheelchair-accessible seating, entrances, and toilets, which isn’t something every restaurant in London can confidently say. Whether you're dining solo on a work break, meeting friends for lunch or dinner, or just in the mood for late-night food, the staff knows how to strike that rare balance of attentive yet relaxed service.

Live music nights are a big hit here-nothing too loud, just the right backdrop to a great evening out. It adds character to an already unique venue and draws a lovely mix of locals and tourists alike. The happy-hour cocktails are a steal and definitely worth planning your visit around.

Whether you’re chasing London’s best cocktail bars, searching for romantic dinner spots in Islington, or looking for a place with consistently great desserts, Hoxley & Porter should absolutely be on your list. It’s the kind of spot that doesn’t just serve food-it creates moments.

We stopped by for an evening snack and had fantastic food and service in a lovely atmosphere. We expect the rest of the menu would be as fantastic as the soup and dessert we had. Would def go again and recommend.

This is our safe spot for a good classic Sunday roast. We went multiple time and we will go again! Lovely arancini and squid (a couple of time was a bit chewy but generally is good) and amazing pork with crispy skin! It’s not the best one in the city that will blow your mind but it’s a good and safe option for a quiet and intimate brunch!

The Sunday Roast was a plentiful plate of flavorful food. The service was great. Not the typical order at the bar pub arrangement, but actual table service. The staff was friendly. It smelled delicious as we were waiting for our food. It's a beautiful bar, quaint seating, and a welcoming environment. The place was hopping as we were leaving. We were pleased they were open and serving food when we arrived around 2:30.

Went for work lunch. Was lovely and greeted well. Had a gap between some.of us due to layout as there 18 of us but was ok. Service was good but some people waited longer for food and drinks. They also serve normal rum and cokes not just wine and cocktails as we assumed via online. Lovely portion food and was really nice also xmas I gave most my food to colleagues but not this time fried salmon was fab and roast potatos and dessert was sticky toffee pudding...gigantic lol tasty. Wood go back again.
